  • Pilot, Danielle Aitchison, and her partner Captain Chris Hood, perform a low level flyover of the Bamiyan Buddhas to promote International Peace Day.  Afghan President Hamid Karzai called for a ceasefire for the day, which was supported by NATO and The United Nations...Regarding flying over the Buddhas Danielle said, "It was cool to think that how many other people have ever done this.  It think we were the first, at least that I know of.   When your flying along (up high) you've got nothing to relate it to, your not passing anything, so your speeds not relative to anything.  But, when you are lower you passing something fast and you can see and feeling it and ya you get that rush and I think ya it was cool - it was great..

UNHAS was established by the UN World Food Program (WFP) to bring aircraft to areas out of reach of normal air services....When asked about flying in a war zone, she says,  "I'm just a normal average female.  My job is maybe a little different to some, but I have the same feminine side as other women.  I don't have any trouble going back to New Zealand relating to people.  I'm just a regular chick.".

  • Pilot, Danielle Aitchison and her partner Chris Hood, narrowly missed being hit by a suicide bomber very similar to the one seen here.  On March 13, 2008 a suicide car bomber rammed into a military convoy on Airport Road, near Kabul International Airport.  The blast killed 6 and injured 15.  Danielle said the blast was 40 meters behind the car she was traveling in and pushed her forward in her seat.  "We got out of their as quickly as possible, because unfortunately you might go to try and help, but a second one might come and try to kill more people.  That was a very humbling experience that brought you right back to where you were and the dangers of being here.". .Pictured here:.A suicide bomber rammed his car into a NATO convoy on Monday, August 11th, 2008, in Kabul, Afghanistan.  According to reports a British soldier and 3 Afghan citizens were killed with at least a dozen more injured.

He said about Danielle, "Ya I have worked with lots of women, and Afghan women in the office. And now I work with Dan.  She is very good woman.  She is always joking with me."  He said there is nothing different about working with a woman.  "No.  Daniel is almost like a man.  Its no problem nothing is different."..When asked about flying in a war zone, she says,  "I'm just a normal average female.
